When A.J. Ross dropped off her dog named Kobe at the PetSmart store in Pittsburgh on November 17, 2020 for what was supposed to be a regular nail clipper, she had no idea that she would return and find his lifeless body on the grooming table. … “The last thing I thought it would be a death sentence,” she said. Ross shared her story in the hope that it will force the network to rethink its scandalous grooming practices: “There are no specific standards and anyone can just wake up one day, take a six-hour online course and have their pet life in their hands,” she told NJ Advance Media. “There needs to be more accountability and oversight.” And she’s already moving the needle: On May 5, four PetSmart employees were charged with animal cruelty.

When Ross returned to the grooming center, staff said Kobe was “fainted and limp,” according to reports. The furious guardian reportedly rushed the dog to the nearest veterinary clinic, where the staff administered artificial respiration, but it was too late – Kobe was dead. Ross, a reporter and news anchor with more than 10 years of experience, didn’t believe PetSmart’s report that he had “just passed out,” so she did what any responsible guardian would do: she demanded to watch surveillance videos.

When the local store manager finally allowed Ross to watch the video on December 1, it was immediately apparent to her why PetSmart was hesitant to let her watch:
“They tied him to a leash and to the end of the grooming table. Thus, his neck is overstretched in different directions, ”Ross reminded the Pittsburgh news agency. “He was hanging. It hung for more than a minute. He fought and was tortured. They didn’t do anything, they just kept cutting his nails. “
A local veterinarian confirmed that the neck was over-stretched, and that hanging the dog over the grooming table “crushed Kobe’s airway, resulting in his death.” After Ross called for an investigation, all four employees (two groomers and two store managers) were reportedly charged with animal cruelty.
Nothing can bring Kobe back, but these allegations could force PetSmart to rethink its infamous grooming practices.
There is no excuse or excuse for Kobe’s death, and PetSmart must grow wiser and make major changes before another companion animal is killed.
Unfortunately, PetSmart and other pet store chains have a long list of accidents with animals that have been injured, allowed to escape, seriously injured and even killed in their hairdressers. An investigation by NJ Advance Media found that employees, including groomers, are forced to comply with quotas, which forces groomers to push animals as quickly as possible, like on a conveyor belt.
