Modesto, California. – After the PETA campaign and two PETA Asia covert investigations use of isolated, chained and caged monkeys in the coconut harvesting industry in Thailand, chain grocery stores Save Mart took off its shelves the entire range of coconut milk produced by Chaokoh. In response, PETA ended its campaign against the company, which included meetings, emails from the group’s nearly 84,000 supporters, and delivery humanely collected coconuts to the CEO of the company – and thanks him for taking the position.
“The frightened chained monkeys are linked to the sale of cans of coconut milk,” says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. “Working with PETA, Save Mart made the kind choice for the monkeys and the most honest decision for their customers.”
PETA Asia’s first investigation revealed cruelty to monkeys on every farm, every educational institution, and every coconut harvesting competition that used monkey labor. When not forced to pick coconuts or perform in circus performances for tourists, the animals were kept tied, chained to old tires, or in cages barely larger than their size. Following a global outcry, the coconut industry said it had changed the practice, but a second PETA Asia investigation found that producers are still using monkey labor.
Save Mart is now among 33,000 stores including Kroger, Albertsons, Safeway, Wegmans, Costco, Target, Food Lion and Stop & Shop that have severed ties to coconut milk brands that use monkey-harvested coconuts. PETA now paying attention other retailers still doing business with Chaokoh, including Walmart and Publix.
Photos from the most recent investigation are available here, and broadcast quality footage is available upon request. PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
