Brooklyn, New York – On Holy Saturday – the day before Easter – PETA supporters jump into Senator Jabari Brisport’s office in downtown Brooklyn to help a vegan lawmaker distribute more than 100 delicious meat-free fried ham to passersby. Vegan hams from May Wah With Lily’s Vegan Pantry, a local business in Chinatown that is decades old.
When: Saturday, April 3, 13.00
Where: At the intersection of DeCalb Avenue and Cumberland Street (near the entrance to the Fort Green Park Green Market), Brooklyn.
“Easter is a celebration of life, and we include pigs who want to live, feel happy and enjoy the sun,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is delighted to partner with Senator Brisport to help families celebrate with one of the many delicious meatless fried foods on the market today.”
In the modern meat industry, mother pigs are placed in narrow metal stalls, slightly larger than their body, and are kept almost constantly pregnant or breastfeeding. Pigs have their tails chopped off, their teeth cut off with pliers, and males are castrated – all without any pain relief. In the slaughterhouse, they are hung upside down – sometimes still conscious – and bleed to death.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. The group offers free vegan starter kits, which can be found here.
