Here are some successes that make us feel good all over the place! In a pioneering formulation that will prevent countless animals from suffering in experiments, it is the first of its kind to test chemicals without using one animal received international recognition.
This new method combines several non-animal tests into one formal, well-defined approach to testing chemicals for their ability to cause an allergic reaction on the skin. This approach could replace existing skin allergy tests using animals – experiments in which their fur is shaved and a chemical is applied to their skin.
Now that the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has approved this method, all 38 OECD countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union, must adopt it for legally required chemical toxicity tests. This means that we can expect to see instant global elimination of the use of animals in skin allergy tests.
Skin allergy tests and the suffering of animals around the world
Animals used in skin allergy tests suffer various side effects such as swelling, blistering, and inflammation before being killed and dissected. In the UK, hundreds and sometimes thousands of animals are used each year for skin allergy tests. Across the European Union, over 47,000 animals were used in just one year.
Not only does the new approach replace these brutal tests, a 2018 study also found that it produces results that are more meaningful to humans than animal tests – a win for animals and humans! PETA scientists have conducted several webinars on the use of advanced non-animal skin allergy testing.
