American troops were captured on video with pride drinking the blood of decapitated cobras, gutting and eating live geckos, killing chickens with bare hands and chewing the living bodies of other animals while their comrades cheered them feverishly. Horrific scenes – more reminiscent of brotherhood hazing ritual than military training – took place during the Cobra Gold 2020 military exercise. Thousands of American troops participate in an annual event held in Thailand in conjunction with Thai and foreign military forces, ostensibly to learn survive in the jungle.
In 2020, PETA sent a letter to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, as well as a letter to the then Secretary of Defense, urging them to stop using live animals during these training sessions. In these letters, we have cited numerous variations on supposed animal-free survival training and pointed out that killing and eating wild animals poses a dangerous threat of zoonotic diseases like the novel coronavirus… In 2021, we also filed a rule-making petition with the US Department of Defense, urging it to begin regulatory procedures to eradicate the brutal, bloodthirsty killing of animals in this exercise.
