The baby cried as his mother died. Then a miracle took place for most parents. The birth of a child is a magical moment filled with joy, friends and family. The day shelley cawley gave birth to her baby should have been one of the best days of her life. Unfortunately, it would wind up being the worst as she and her husband faced a life-threatening reality that would tear their world apart.
You won’t believe the story for shelley and her husband, jeremy, a baby was not exactly in the plan living in concord. North carolina shelley was working towards becoming a nurse, and her husband was a director for the ymca. However, life was about to take an unexpected turn when shelley discovered she was pregnant. Despite not planning the pregnancy, both shelly and jeremy were over the moon with excitement. They immediately began making the proper preparations, such as putting money aside purchasing supplies and even attending weekly birthing classes.
When the child came, they wanted to be 100 ready. Shelley and jeremy were determined to do a natural birth without the use of medications or unnecessary procedures. Sadly, their plan was not meant to be at eight months. Shelley began to experience. Complications in her pregnancy, which would lead to her developing a blood clot in her leg.
To say, shelley was devastated, would be an understatement. Having a child with the person you love is such a big deal. I was looking forward to getting to experience that then, all of a sudden, the plan was taken away. From me, shelley told the washington post, hoping to control the clot shelley was put on blood thinners with the hopes it would break up. However, time was not on the young mother‘s side as her water broke ahead of schedule.
Realizing the danger jeremy rushed his wife to the carolinas medical center northeast. Despite the stress, both parents were excited to meet their child. Unfortunately, after shelley was admitted to the hospital, the pregnancy did not progress as it should. She was diagnosed with preeclampsia, as well as a liver disease which can be life-threatening on top of that. Her blood pressure was through the roof.
Could things get any worse for the young couple with shelley’s life hanging on a thread? The doctors rushed her to the operating room to perform an emergency c-section. Realizing things were going very wrong. Shelley began to worry not only for the life of her baby, but for herself as well shelley revealed to the washington post. I was telling the doctors that i was scared.
I wasn’t going to wake up to this day. I don’t know why i had that feeling. I guess it was some sort of sense. I had that something was going to go wrong, a premonition because they treated everything throughout my pregnancy, just fine, thankfully shelley and jeremy’s daughter rylan was delivered safely on september, 4th 2014 weighing 7 pounds, 11 ounces, even better. She was completely healthy.
There were no complications whatsoever. Unfortunately, for shelley things were not looking. Good jeremy was given rylan to hold, while doctors rushed away with shelley. At this point, jeremy didn’t even realize his wife was in trouble. They just told me that shelley was going to be in recovery and it would be a little bit before she reunited with us.
Sadly, the reality of the situation was quite grim. Fluid had begun to fill her lungs and her blood clot had broken free and moved into her respiratory system, resulting in a fatal, pulmonary embolism, and this wasn’t even the worst of it. When a baby’s born, it’s usually placed in the gentle care of the mother. Who welcomes it to life? This story is a little bit different for shelley cawley, who, thanks to her baby for saving her life in the pre-dawn hours of one saturday last september, shelley colley’s husband and their newborn daughter were being escorted through hallways of a north carolina hospital cauley had slipped into A coma during childbirth and some thought it might be time for her family to say goodbye.
Her blood pressure was dangerously low 60 over 40 doctors later told the family, and her heart rate was soaring. More than 180 beats per minute. Cauley was hooked up to what doctors called the last chance ventilator a machine pumping air into her lungs with such force that it rattled her hospital bed with each artificial breath. Her husband, jeremy cauley, said, but the hospital staff had one more idea to try. The nurses instructed us to strip the baby down and put her skin to skin with shelley her husband told the washington post.
Their hope was that if shelley could smell the baby feel the baby hear the baby even in a coma. It would give a reason to fight as time passed. Shelley’S blood pressure fell dramatically, her heart rate skyrocketed and she was put on a ventilator to breathe. This all resulted in the new mom slipping into a coma. The doctors knew the options were limited and many were afraid she wouldn’t survive.
The doctors hoped that the ventilator would help stabilize shelly’s condition and get her to a place where she could breathe on her own again. Sadly, it didn’t seem to work and the medical team scrambled to come up with new ideas to try in a last-ditch effort. The medical team decided to try skin on skin contact with shelley’s daughter, rylan, placing the baby on shelley’s chest. She was prompted to cry. The hope was that shelley would hear her and begin to fight to live.
Unfortunately, no one knew if it would actually work. So a waiting game began with the hopes that she would somehow start to turn around. We didn’t know how she was going to make it and she had no interaction with her child nurse ashley mannis said to the washington post. If that was going to be it for her, we wanted to be able to tell the baby your mom held you. Thankfully, the skin-to-skin contact with rylan began to work and doctors noticed a significant change in her vital signs.
Refusing to give up on his wife, jeremy, made sure rylan and shelley spend time together every single day after a week of therapy. Something amazing happened. Shelley finally, woke up, she recalls the experience as one that was weird to say the least. It was a weird feeling like i was between a dream in reality, but i do remember as clear as day looking at her face how beautiful she was. I don’t think i knew at the time i’d been asleep for a week, but it was my first time meeting my daughter i was so overwhelmed.
It would be only a year later that shelley would graduate from nursing school and go back to the very place. Her life was saved to work. She admits that having a near-death experience changed her perspective on both work and life. It hits me a lot. I see patients come in the emergency department, some of them critical and on the edge of life and death, and i know that was me: you have to take a step back and pray for them and for their family and then live the best life you can.
We could see a spike in her vitals on the monitor. We knew that somewhere in there she was hearing her baby rylan saved her mom’s life. Mana said jeremy chokes up remembering the moment it was the crying that got shelley going again got her fighting again. I got my wife back. He says it would be another week before shelley came out of the coma completely and could hold her baby for the first time.
Both mom and baby were fine, with no complications from the ordeal. Manus tells people it’s a complete miracle. There’S no other way to describe it. It’S been a year since shelley’s, miraculous recovery, and this past weekend the family celebrated ryland’s, first birthday, with a big glitter filled party for friends and family. They even made a time capsule for the adorable little blonde girl to open.
When she turns 18., but there’s one thing, mom doesn’t plan to wait very long to tell her. I just look at her now and think of the amazing bond we have. I can tell her when she grows up that she saved my life. She says it was a weird feeling like i was between a dream and reality.
She told the post, but i do remember as clear as day looking at her face how beautiful she was. I don’t think i knew at the time i’d been asleep for a week, but it was my first time meeting my daughter, i was so overwhelmed. Bonding happens when you and your baby begin to feel a strong attachment with each other. You may feel great love and joy. When you look at your baby, you may feel very protective of your baby.
It’S this first relationship with you that teaches babies to feel secure and good about themselves with other people. mother and baby are usually bonded in an unspoken way before the birth. The baby knows more about the mother than the mother knows about the baby. Before it’s even born. It knows what the mother sounds and smells like.
It knows the comfort of its mother, and it knows who its mother is things like soft talking, eye contact skin to skin contact. You can try to show pictures or books or blocks dolls sing songs. It’S important to keep talking to your baby. Research shows improved vocabulary and social functioning. When parents do this soon, your baby will be smiling and be able to sit until then, even if they’re not smiling yet don’t take it personally, get down on the floor and play co-sleeping and nursing also foster a bond.
That’S truly a gift to both mother and child too, and father even making a ritual of singing a silly song while getting changed can start wiring the brain for positive relationships. You’Ll know you’re doing the right thing. You’Ll know your baby. Better and you’ll soon see the benefits treating your baby like a human instead of a piece of luggage. Babies, when in the womb have an unlimited supply of nutritious blood, that’s delivered via their mothers through the placenta and the umbilical cord mother‘s blood, delivers oxygen and clears off carbon dioxide efficiently.
Baby need not breathe independently. To achieve so light is luxurious, however, once born the umbilical cord is severed and babies are now on their own they’re independent beings responsible for fulfilling their mother‘s needs of oxygen and carbon dioxide clearance, for which they need to initiate breathing.
So how does the baby know when to start breathing good question immediately after birth and before crying the carbon dioxide levels start increasing rapidly in baby’s, blood, pregnancy and childbirth can be very traumatic and not always welcome, fortunately, for most of us, the miracle of birth, although It is natural physical process feels pretty miraculous, seeing holding and nursing your baby after nine months of anticipation is amazing they’re, a part of you but they’re.
A unique new person in the world that you created the feeling of love and joy and wonder, are indescribable most dads, feel it too. You can see it in their faces.
What a great bond, thanks for reading.
