Canadian Senator Murray Sinclair collaborated with Dr. Jane Goodall imagine Jane Goodall Law, which, when passed, will become one of the most stringent animal laws in history. This law could cause a shock that will change the legal status of animals, not only in Canada, but all over the world.
We must urge the Canadian Senate to pass this landmark legislation to elephants, dolphins, great apes and other animals the right to live without hunting, captivity and cruel treatment.
IN Jane Goodall Law, S218, will prohibit new captivity of great apes and elephants, as well as their use, including cetaceans, in performances. It will also reinforce the existing but erroneous ban on the import of ivory and other game trophies, and will give legal status to great apes, elephants, whales and dolphins. Legal status for animals will be a watershed moment that will change the animal welfare landscape in Canada.
Monkeys, elephants and cetaceans are all intelligent animals capable of suffering, and they also have a rich emotional and social life. But, unfortunately, in the case of animals in zoos, they are forced to live their life in prison, and then sent or kill when they are no longer needed. In the case of trade in exotic species of animals, the animals are abducted from their homes, separated from their families and sentenced to life behind bars or killed directly for their horns or fur.
More broadly, this bill formalizes a new language in animal welfare discourse that recognizes animal intelligence as well as their emotional and social intelligence. It will be based on the principle that animals deserve to be treated like persons with legal status and rights.
Unfortunately, this will be a grandfather for animals that are currently in captivity, and it allows exceptions to be made from the ban on captivity for the sake of “conservation, welfare or safe scientific research.” All this is regrettable and must be corrected over time.
The bill was drafted to allow the government to extend the provisions to other captive species such as big cats through Noah Klaus. In addition, to highlight an important point, the bill will show the way to transform the way Canadian society treats and treats animals.
Not only will this bill go through the Senate, it will also have to go through the House of Commons, facing opposition from animal exploitation businesses, including zoos, hunting organizations and safaris.
Although Senator Sinclair resigned on January 31, he expresses confidence that there is “very broad” support for the bill in the Canadian Senate. If the bill is eventually passed by the Senate, Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith said he would sponsor the bill in the House of Representatives.
When it passes Jane Goodall Law will join the ranks of the most important animal welfare legislation in world history.
