Washington – Following a vigorous PETA campaign, which included formal complaints to senior Ministry of Defense officials and protests in front of the Pentagon, the Royal Thai Embassy and the home of Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, a spokesman for the Thai military told PETA that no snakes, lizards or any no other animals were used or killed in this year’s Cobra Gold military exercise in Thailand.
“PETA has exposed the fact that forcing military personnel to eat animals alive and suck cobra blood is dangerous, cruel and probably illegal,” says PETA vice president Shalin Gala. “Such boyish barbarism should be part of the history books, and this year demonstrates that there should never be animals again at Cobra Gold events.”
During last year’s Cobra Gold Competition, US Marines and instructors were registered killing chickens with their bare hands, skinning and eating live geckos, eating live scorpions and tarantulas, decapitating cobras and drinking their blood, and enjoying ritualistic killing and consumption of animals. … any action that would violate US animal cruelty laws and possibly the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
As part of its campaign, PETA filed a rule-making petition to Austin III and complaints to Marine Commandant General David H. Berger, then Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and Vice Admiral John W. Fuller.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org and follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
