PETA documents reveal a shocking level of abuse and incompetence by experimenters at Emory University and the Yerkes National Primate Research Center.
The surgical sponge remained in the female monkey’s body for four months after the staff gave her a caesarean section. In addition, the experimenters used the same kidney biopsy needle on two animals without properly sterilizing it between uses, and the rhesus monkey died after being injected with a substance that caused anaphylactic shock in the animal.
Taken in 2017, this photograph of an elderly macaque woman imprisoned at Emory University shows a gruesome wound on her thigh. This was the result of incompetence and neglect on the part of the school, which continues today.
As a result of our complaint to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) about these shocking incidents, the agency is currently investigating Emory and Yerkes for violations of the Federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
Suffering spreads to mice and rats
In addition to these recent incidents – all federal animal welfare violations – Emory University has also faced dozens of additional federal animal welfare violations.
Mice and rats died of hunger or dehydration, and live mice were found in a freezer designed for dead animals. The mice developed complications after the tips of their tails were cut off and the toes of newborn mice were amputated, which does not comply with protocol.
Taxpayer dollars are spent on these cruel experiments
In 2020, Emory and Yerkes University used 1,485 primates in experiments and put 2,270 more primates in their dull labs. In the same year, institutions received $ 507,546,965 in grants from the National Institutes of Health, that is, taxpayer dollars. However, even with hundreds of millions of dollars in funding, Emory and Yerkes are clearly unable to meet minimum animal welfare standards.
