The biggest victory for animal advocates was likely the largest remaining dog meat auction house in South Korea, Nakwon Auction House, closed this week after verification by Major Cho Kwan Khan illegal farm for the production of dog meat and auction in the city Namyanju. The dogs were removed from the facility and the owner voluntarily reported the closure to the government.

The closure came after a secret investigation by a non-profit animal rights organization in the summer of 2020. Lady Freethinkers which captured shots and images of dogs kept in captivity, which are stored and sold in Nakwon auction house. As WAN reported last year, an investigation found more than 200 dogs contained in 60 metal boxes and cages, each containing three to four dogs.

The closure follows broader measures by Mayor Cho regarding dog meat farming in Namyangju. IN January 2021 Mayor Cho called a joint meeting of the relevant departments to discuss measures to counter the illegal activities of the dog farm and auction house. At the meeting, he demanded that the departments take tough administrative measures against violations of the law that lead to damage to society and the environment. The city government also filed a complaint with law enforcement and took administrative action against the dog farm and auction house on charges of building an illegal structure and altering its use without permission.

“We applaud Mayor Cho for his decisive action, which sends a strong international message that dog meat farming must be a thing of the past,” said Nina Jekel, founder and president of Lady Freethinker in a statement posted to WAN. “During the investigation of Lady Nakwon Free-Thinking Auction House, frightened dogs were found hiding in tight, filthy cages while workers were stabbing them with metal hooks. Breeding and breeding dogs for meat causes enormous and unnecessary suffering to animals. “
Following an investigation this summer, Lady Freethinking also filed a petition calling for Major Cho turn off Nakwon Auction House; the application received more than 46,000 signatures. Representatives of the local partner Lady Freethinkers, Save the Korean dogs, delivered the petition to Mayor Cho’s office. Save Korean Dogs also provided Lady Freethinker’s investigation file and discussed animal cruelty at the Naqwon auction with the City Department of Agriculture and the Mayor’s Secretary, and organized protests outside of the auction.

Breeding dog meat in South Korea remains legal, but consumer demand for meat remains low. IN Korea Animal Welfare Association found in 2019 survey of South Koreans it’s simple 12.2% of respondents still ate dogs, compared with thirteen% in 2018. It was also reported that 41% those who used to eat dogs are no longer eaten compared to 39.5% in 2018.
Unfortunately, it is estimated one million dogs continue to suffer from the horrific meat trade in South Korea. That’s why Congresswoman Han Jung Ae recently introduced House Bill 7035 who stands for country amendment Animal Protection Act this would explicitly prohibit the slaughter and processing of dogs for food.
Please sign Lady Freethinkers a new petition calling for the adoption of this important bill to ban the cruel trade in dog meat in South Korea, HERE!
