Ravens are known as some of the smartest and most resourceful birds in the animal kingdom, and for many reasons! These shiny members Corvus The genus knows how to create and use primitive tools made from twigs and stones, have complex means of communication with each other, and can even remember where they store food for long periods of time.
The territory is home to about 45 different species of crows, ravens and rooks. Corvus genus. They exist on all continents except South America and Antarctica. They are, of course, extremely intelligent birds, and their unusually high intelligence means they have adapted to learn how to hunt and eat a wide variety of foods.
Let’s take a closer look at what crows eat, their favorite foods, and the ways they find food and hunt for it.
Typical Crow Diet
Ravens are omnivorous, meaning they eat a mixture of plants and animals. They are extremely adaptable and easily adaptable, which has certainly contributed to their rather long lifespan, on average 20 to 30 years.
Most crows are not very picky and are more than happy to eat a wide variety of foods, such as:
- Various seeds and nuts
- Fruits, most commonly berries
- Grains
- Beetles
- worms
- Horticultural crops
- mice
- Birthmarks
- Molluscs
- Food collected from dumpsters and crowded places.
- Lizards
- Little snakes
- Frogs and salamanders
- Eggs
- Small fish
As you can see, crows have learned to use just about any food source they can come across, which means they can quickly adapt and thrive in a variety of rural, suburban and urban areas.
What’s the crow’s favorite food?
While crows will happily eat anything in order to survive, they do have a few foods that they like more than others. If you’ve recently befriended a crow in your backyard and want to offer them something they like, consider one of their favorites:
- Nuts, namely peanuts, walnuts and almonds.
- Eggs (raw, boiled, omelet … for a crow it doesn’t matter!)
- Pieces of meat such as chicken and fish
- Dry food for dogs and cats and dogs (yes, really!)
How do crows find food?
Very intelligent and sociable, crows usually hunt and forage in family groups. These family groups usually consist of a couple and their descendants from the past two to three years! They stick together for long periods of time and often work together in surprisingly complex ways to find and capture their various food sources.
Surprisingly, some crows have even learned to use rudimentary tools to make it even easier for them to catch their prey and gather food! A 2005 study showed how New Caledonian crows commonly use items such as modified twigs, rocks, and other items to extract and tear their food apart. Even young birds were smart enough to quickly learn how to use these primitive tools!
This is an incredible discovery considering that very few animals are smart enough to understand how to use objects in this way. This is another reason why crows are some of the most colorful birds in the world!
