2. Massive oil spill off the coast of Israel damages sea turtles covered with thick tar; Rescue and clean-up work continues
Israel is on an emergency race to save wildlife after an oil tanker leaked into Mediterranean Sea. This is Israel’s worst environmental disaster in recent years.
According to statement From Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection, The sticky black tar started washing dishes and polluting beaches last Wednesday due to stormy weather. There are fears that another storm with high waves will begin this week.
Thousands of trained volunteers across Israel are helping to restore beaches, including rescuing marine animals. Israel Sea Turtle Rescue Center confirmed in the message on his facebook page that he was treating several resin-coated turtles.

Canadian Senator Murray Sinclair collaborated with Dr. Jane Goodall imagine Jane Goodall Law, which, when passed, will become one of the most stringent animal laws in history. This bill could cause a shock that will change the legal status of animals, not only in Canada, but all over the world.
We must urge the Canadian Senate to pass this landmark legislation to elephants, dolphins, great apes and other animals the right to live without hunting, captivity and abuse.
IN Jane Goodall Law, S218, will prohibit new captivity of great apes and elephants, as well as their use, including cetaceans, in performances. It will also reinforce the existing but mistaken ban on the import of ivory and other game trophies and give legal status to great apes, elephants, whales and dolphins. Legal status for animals will be a watershed moment that will reshape the animal welfare landscape in Canada.

4. After the historic Texas cold weather, primates still need water, food, cleaning products and donations for chimpanzees and other rescued animals. Sanctuary
Primates in the first place, nonprofit haven in Bexar County, Texas which provides lifelong care for hundreds of animals, including 32 chimpanzees, was among millions of people without electricity in the state after an Arctic explosion cut electricity due to freezing power lines, freezing pressurized natural gas production, bursting pipes and increased demand for electricity.
While staff and volunteers worked tirelessly around the clock, evacuating dozens of animals from the 78-acre reserve and using heaters and generators to warm the remaining animals, they also mourn the loss of approximately 12 animals, including monkeys and lemurs, to the cold.

5. Norway plans to slaughter over 1,200 minke whales during its dire whale hunting season in 2021.
Contrary to global moratorium on commercial whaling, Norway reintroduces annual production quota 1278 minke whales for their barbaric 2021 whaling season.
Last week, Odd Emil Ingebrigzen, Minister of Fisheries of Norway, announced a quota that has not changed compared to last year. Ingebrigzen expressed hope that “the upward trend in demand for whale meat will continue.” Disgusting! Supporting Ingebrigtsen’s views, the whaling industry also says that the demand for whale meat has improved, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Norway’s 2020 whaling season kicked off with April 1 to September 30th. Slightly more than 500 whales were killed compared to 429 in 2019. This is the highest result since 2016, when almost 600 whales were killed. Sixteen whaling vessels requested permission to hunt whales last year, but only 13 took part.

6. The Horse Carriage Safety Act was recently re-enacted in the United States with 105 bipartisan co-sponsors.
IN Horse Transport Safety Act (HTSA) was recently reintroduced in the US to prohibit the transport of horses across state lines in double-deck trucks or trailers containing two or more levels stacked on top of each other.
As WAN previously reported, bill passed by the US House of Representatives last July as part of a larger federal transport package, but the Senate did not vote on the law. This year’s version of the bill now has 105 bipartisan co-sponsors.

7. European Zoos Call for Dropping Captive Giraffe Following New Born Free Report
On February 9, 2014 healthy two year old giraffe named Marius was rejected and subsequently dissected in front of the public at Copenhagen Zoo. The zoo shockingly justified its actions by claiming that its genes had already been represented in a population of captive giraffes in Europe, and that for a young male giraffe in zoos that were members of European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA).
Then the body parts of Marius were fed to the predators of the zoo. On the seventh anniversary of this terrible act, Born free urged European zoos to move away from captive giraffes and instead focus their conservation resources on protecting giraffe populations in the wild.

8. WAN Exclusive Update on Controversial Case of Alleged Neglect of 20 Farm Animals in Colorado
After receiving information about the alleged situation with the storage of animals in Colorado, including hungry pigs left outside in freezing conditions, WAN did a little research and uncovered a gruesome case of animal cruelty.
Unfortunately, this complex case includes the group 20 farm animals and others who are innocent victims of serious neglect were allegedly in care Halina Morley and Laurel Burchell.
One of the reasons this case differs from most livestock accumulation cases is the small “manageable” number of animals in the area. Weld County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating.

9. California wants to help farmers switch to plant-based cultivation through the implementation of the Smart Climate Agriculture program.
Last week, Assembly Member Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) with coauthors Social compassion in legislation and Good Food Institute, presented AB 1289, Smart Climate Agriculture Program. Assembly Member Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) co-sponsored a bill that was created to support California farmers looking to move from livestock to crop production.
Helping local farmers make the transition will strengthen California’s position as a leader in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, creating jobs in a growing industry, providing healthy and sustainable food for a growing population, and helping keep family farms in business.
