Ventura, Iowa – Rewards from hero to animals are on their way from PETA Kids – PETA’s youth arm – to five local kids who spent part of their summer vacation helping turtles safely cross Balsam Avenue as they move between Clear Lake and Ventura Marsh. Ten-year-old Zacayus Moe and Cole Meyer, 9-year-old Keygan Hoover and 8-year-old Blake Meyer and Kasen Wenzel said they recently rescued at least 20 turtles in just one day and helped nearly 200 all together.
“I wanted to help the turtles after seeing a bunch of dead turtles run over by cars, so my friends and I decided to help them cross the road,” says Kasen. “I would tell other children that animals sometimes need our help and they are very pleased to help.”
“The busy road can be a death trap for a running turtle,” says Martha Holmberg, PETA Senior Director of Youth Programs. “These children have saved hundreds of lives, and PETA Kids hopes their kindness will inspire others to look for animals in need of help.”
On its website, PETA Kids offers a guide to helping turtles, which notes that even if their shells are cracked or crushed, turtles can remain alive for days or even weeks in excruciating pain. Turtle helpers should guide the turtles in the direction they are heading and never leave an animal to suffer. Affected turtles should be taken to your local animal shelter or the nearest veterinarian for help.
PETA Kids – whose motto, among other things, is that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” – opposes racism, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETAKids.com or subscribe to the group on Facebook or Instagram…
